Therapeutic massage is a general term for any modality that reduce stress, relieves pain and work on a specific problem. Therapeutic massage involves a wide range of explicit manual techniques by the therapist’s hands that can be used to target specific tissues in your body, including muscles, fascia, lymph nodes, joints, and tendons. Contraindications of massage are fever, contagious disease, lesions, people who have taken pain medications, under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol, severe hypertension, blood clots and kidney/liver conditions. If you feel like you need a massage but are unsure if you can receive one consult your doctor.
03. What should I expect during my therapeutic massage treatment?
Depends on your needs. Do you want to de-stress or you have an ache that will not go away? Do you want a full body or more focused on a localized area? It can be restful or painful. Just remember you are in control of what you want.
- If the massage is too painful, tell your therapist.
- Want more pressure? Tell your therapist.
A good massage therapist will listen and work with you. They should discuss the plan with you and keep you in the loop.
04. How often should I have a massage?
The following is the common frequency advised to clients. However, your treatment plan may differ depending on the severity of your existing medical condition.
For Relaxation: As often as you like and can afford! Weekly, monthly or longer – prevention is still better than a cure. For maximum benefits, booking a regular slot is recommended.
For Pain Relief: Leave at least 3 days between massages to allow muscles to recover. Weekly or every two weeks sessions are best until the pain subsides. Speak to your RMT about your custom treatment plan.
For Relief of Knots: Weekly is advised for at least four weeks to fully work out the knots, and thereafter monthly sessions to prevent them from reoccurring.
